SAILING IN THE SOLENT REPORT - SEPTEMBER 2009

I think the biggest winner for this weekend was the fantastic sunset on Saturday evening.  We assembled as always on Friday evening and had a good meal and couple of bottles of wine together in the top room of x pub. Went through what everyone wanted to get out of the weekend and then headed back to the yacht for some much needed sleep.

Saturday morning came, a little too quickly for my liking but that's life. After a safety briefing we set out to Yarmouth in moderate winds of around 10-12kts with a significant number of yachts around us as a result of the Red Funnel Cowes Keelboat Championship. After dodging the numerous yachts bearing down on us with spinnakers up we pulled into Yarmouth and proceeded to consume the largest fish and chips (as can only be had in Yarmouth) known to man in a pub/restaurant near the harbour before heading down to Poole.

On the way over to Poole we slowly ran out of wind and had to revert to motoring however the sunset was stunning and finally after a nervous few minutes of negotiating narrow and relatively shallow  (marked) channels we were at Poole harbour. It suffices to say that everyone was shattered and after a few drinks and a nice italian we hit the sack for the return the next morning.

Sunday greated us with a blue sky, sun and wind! After a quick wash we headed back towards Hamble Point, with the wind gusting up to 22kts giving the newcomers of the group their first experience of sitting out on the windward side which we raced up the solent with the remainder of the Red Funnel yachts.

We had chartered an Oceanis 411 at the last minute as our first yacht had become unavailable from a previous charter company. Despite being a 1999 build the boat was in very good condition and our only complaint a worn traveller sheet and one of the heads was slightly tempremental. Overall it was a great weekend and as always much was learnt, drunk and fun was had as well as sailing a full 78nm.

Sailing in the Solent Report - July 2009

We had a cracking weekend down in the Solent last weekend 3rd to 5th July.  Nine of us chartered two 37ft Oceanis yachts from Hamble point and raced over to Osbourne bay for lunch.

Needless to say the crew skippered by Dave and crewed by some race crew beat the crew Skippered & crewed by the Malcolm brothers and co.  One of the main problems was their inability to spot the contending yacht.  This compounded with the fact that Dave had decided on a new finishing point meant that there was little chance of any meaningful racing happening in the morning.

We pontooned up for a spot of lunch and then headed off for Chichister bay.  Again a small race ensued however the keen sail trimmers on Daves yacht kept then amply in the lead.  We layed anchor in the bay and had an awesome BBQ (prepared by Dave) on the beach followed by some good drinking games on one of the yachts.

On Sunday we were treated to some great wind of around 16-18kts gusting 22kts which meant a reef in the sail and great sailing speeds of up to 8kts.  Daves Yacht practiced various drills including MOB and general polishing of sailing skills while the Malcolm crew tucked into there bar for a relaxed sail around Portsmouth and eventually back into hamble.

Overall it was a great weekend and I look forwards to more adventures.

Welcome to The London Sailing Club

The London Sailing Club / Meetup group have put up a website so as to have somewhere to put photos as well as information, files and news for new and existing members.

London Sailing Club is a totally online based club for people living in and around London who enjoy or want to get into sailing but perhaps don't know many people who are into sailing.

It was created by Duncan who works in London and didn't have anyone to go sailing with.  Since then we've been out sailing, have courses booked for RYA Day Skippers as well as having an awesome and growing community.
